Beaver County votes to opt into opioid settlement; staff to review paperwork before September deadline

Beaver County voted July 15 to opt into a national opioid settlement offer and asked county attorneys to monitor incoming paperwork required to finalize participation before the opt-in deadline. Jenny (county attorney’s office) briefed the commission on the settlement offer and a related distribution timetable.
Jenny said the settlement provides an estimated $5,000,000,000 in total funds to be distributed to participating jurisdictions, with an initial distribution of about $1,500,000,000 expected in 2026. She said the county must decide whether to opt in by Sept. 30, 2025, and that opting in would finalize the county’s direct claims against certain manufacturers while preserving the opportunity to deploy funds toward opioid-prevention and treatment programs. If the county declined to opt in, Jenny said it would preserve litigation rights but the state appears likely to participate.
Commissioners moved and seconded a motion to opt in; the motion carried unanimously. The board asked staff to ensure settlement notices and opt-in paperwork are routed to county offices and not filtered as spam so the county can complete any necessary legal steps before the September deadline.
