Resident asks Ashland County to back Amtrak extension to northern Wisconsin and Upper Peninsula

A private citizen, Luis Valens, spoke during public comment at the July 15 Ashland County Executive Committee meeting and asked the county to support extending Amtrak service into northern Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
Valens described a proposed extension that would connect Escanaba to Duluth as an extension of the Hiawatha service from Milwaukee and said the route would create new economic-development, health-care and education access for the region. He asked the committee for either a letter of support or a formal county resolution and said he had provided a Chippewa County, Michigan, resolution as a template the county could use.
County Administrator Dan Grady asked Valens to send a copy of his request and materials to the administrator's office so staff could review it and consider where to place it on an agenda for discussion. Valens said he would send the package.
No committee action was taken at the meeting; the committee requested the materials for follow-up review.
