Michelle Barriga, who identified herself as a college core fellow, spoke during a public comment period about her experience in the fellowship and encouraged other students to consider similar programs. "We are picking up palm fronds," Barriga said, correcting a brief mispronunciation. "Being a college core fellow, it's different than from a regular job. The work you're doing is actually important and valuable and you feel connected to it." Barriga described cohort-based elements of the fellowship, saying participants "go to conferences together and you do trainings and you do beach cleanups." She added that the program can expose students to work they might not have expected to enjoy and can redirect career pathways: "Whether or not you know what you wanna do, I would recommend this, and you might end up doing some work that you thought wasn't for you, and you end up really enjoying it and kind of, like, diverting your pathway in that direction." Her remarks were delivered as personal testimony; no formal action, vote or staff direction was taken in response during the recorded segment.
