Building department reports downturn in construction value but rising home prices; electrical inspector hire expected

Richard Nelson of the Medina County Building Department reported to commissioners that combined construction valuation in June fell about 38% from the previous June — a decline most pronounced in commercial permits — while the average new home price rose to $492,000 for June and the year‑to‑date average stood at $436,000.
Nelson said the department issued 29 new home starts in June, slightly below average, and that monthly receipts were down about 5.5% year‑to‑date. He noted the department issued eight commercial permits for the month. Review times have slipped, Nelson said, with residential plan reviews taking about five to six days and commercial reviews approaching 30 days.
Nelson also reported the department has hired an electrical inspector who is expected to begin in a couple of weeks pending test results; he said the lack of inspectors had constrained operations and the new hire should improve processing times.
Commissioners thanked Nelson for the report. No formal action was required.
