The Wichita Police Department has applied for a grant to expand access to its real-time information center for the school district, a change staff said would “help improve our response to incidents at our schools throughout the city.” Assistant City Manager Martin described the grant during agenda review.
Council Member Ballard asked that the item be pulled from the consent agenda so the council could receive a brief public update at the workshop later in the month, citing school-safety concerns. “I think maybe that's something that we should pull and just give a brief update about when that comes up during workshop at the end of the month,” Ballard said.
Captain Moses committed to attend and provide more detail. “I'll be happy to be there on, Tuesday, the 20 fourth, and then, we can work if you want a presentation on the workshop as well, we can make that happen,” Captain Moses said.
Staff described the project as a joint effort among the Wichita Police Department, the school district and 911 to expand access to the department's real-time information center; the agenda-review summary listed the item for the consent agenda on the upcoming meeting. No grant award decision or council vote occurred during the agenda review; Ballard requested a public update and Captain Moses agreed to appear at the next meeting or workshop to provide more information.
