Aviation board asks city commission to authorize 2029 centennial subcommittee, plans to coordinate with Ninety‑Nines and museum

The Lawrence Aviation Advisory Board voted on June 4 to ask the city commission to authorize a subcommittee to plan centennial activities tied to the airport’s 2029 anniversary and related events.

Board members said they have begun preliminary outreach — including discussions with the Northeast Kansas chapter of The Ninety‑Nines and the Douglas County Museum — and that a subcommittee would help organize historical displays, a compass‑rose feature and public events. Board members said the Ninety‑Nines offered to participate and that a professional landscape designer has volunteered to help with drawings for a compass rose demonstration.

A motion to request city commission authorization for a subcommittee passed by voice vote; board members noted that the city commission must formally approve any advisory subcommittee before it convenes. Staff said it will advise members on the formal steps for requesting authorization and will copy city leadership on any request letters.

Board members discussed limits on subcommittee size under city rules and suggested inviting partner organizations such as the Ninety‑Nines, the historical museum and the chamber for coordination. Staff said they would provide guidance on the commission process and next steps for advisory board endorsement and city commission action.
