Jan Beatty, chair of the commission’s age‑friendly subcommittee, told the board the plan was developed with resident surveys and focus groups and that it organizes actions around four “domains of livability.” The plan includes a three‑year set of actions and asks town departments and community partners to support implementation.
Board members praised the work but raised questions about specific policy items and how the commission would advance recommendations that require town policy changes. One board member asked about references in the plan to property‑tax abatements and incentives for accessory dwelling units (ADUs); commission leaders said the metrics are meant to guide the town and that detailed policy changes would be brought to the board or relevant committees for consideration.
The board made clear that any action requiring town funding or regulatory change would return to the board for the usual budgetary or land‑use review. The plan itself includes metric targets, partner organizations and a schedule for proposed actions; commission members said metrics were requested by AARP as part of joining the national network.
The board voted unanimously to accept receipt of the plan and to support the town’s submission to finalize Simsbury’s age‑friendly status with AARP.
Next steps: the commission will coordinate with town departments on priority items, present any required budget requests in the normal capital or operating cycles, and return to the board with progress reports.
