El Paso commissioners honor 20 years of Ambrosio Guillen Texas State Veterans Home

The El Paso County Commissioners Court on July 14 adopted a resolution recognizing the twentieth anniversary of the Ambrosio Guillen Texas State Veterans Home in El Paso.
The resolution, presented and accepted during the court’s consent business, notes that the facility opened in February 2005 and provides “high quality long term care and specialized services” for veterans, spouses and gold star parents. Judge Samaniego moved to adopt the measure; Commissioner Olguin seconded the motion and the court approved it.
The measure says the home was named for Staff Sergeant Ambrosio Guillen, a native of El Paso and a United States Marine awarded the Medal of Honor for actions in the Korean War, and it credits the Texas Veterans Land Board and federal and local partners for ongoing investments and modernization efforts. The resolution also praises the home’s staff for “compassion, dignity, and respect.”
Didi William Stewart, identified in court as the on-site representative for the Ambrosio Guillen Texas State Veterans Home on behalf of the Texas Veterans Land Board, accepted the recognition and thanked the court. Stewart said the award “is not just a milestone. It is a testament to the unwavering commitment of commissioner Don Buckingham whose leadership and vision continue to elevate the standard of care for Texas veterans.”
Antoinette Hunt, identified as a veteran county service officer, also addressed the court and described the facility as “one of the cleanest, most pristine, and just dignified places.”
No further action or funding was required by the court at that time; the resolution is a formal acknowledgment and commendation from the county. The court recorded the vote as carried with Commissioners Stout and Butler absent from that vote.
County staff said the resolution was signed in July 2025 and will remain part of the court’s minutes as a public recognition of the home’s two decades of service.
