James Buddy Bush, the newly named principal of Lake Travis High School, and Matthew Nelson, the newly named principal of Lakeway Elementary, were introduced to the community during the Lake Travis ISD Board of Trustees meeting.
The board recognized Bush and Nelson in formal introductions and gave each an opportunity to address trustees, district leadership and the public. The recognitions highlighted Bush's previous role leading Grand Oaks High School and Nelson's experience at Rosedale School in Austin ISD.
Bush told trustees he is "all in" on serving Lake Travis students and staff and said he looked forward to supporting state-title pursuits and campus pride. The introductory remarks listed that the Lake Travis High principal search drew about 40 applicants and noted Bush's prior campus had roughly 3,900 students under his leadership.
Nelson said he and his family are excited to join the Lakeway community, noted his decade-plus campus leadership experience and described a focus on "relationship-centered leadership, innovative instructional practices, and staff development initiatives." The board presentation said Nelson led Rosedale, a campus the district described as 100% special education, and that he increased enrollment there by about 31% during his tenure.
Both introductions included brief family acknowledgments and invitations to the community to engage with the new principals as they begin their roles. No formal board action was taken at the time of the introductions; the remarks were recognition items on the agenda.
The district plans to finalize administrative paperwork and onboarding with both principals before the start of their responsibilities.
The board moved on to its budget and staffing agenda items after the introductions.
