Plano ISD bond program shows progress on CTE center, Haggard Middle rebuild and senior high renovations
Summary
District planners reported construction progress across multiple bond projects, including foundational work for the Career and Technical Education Center, site work and demolition at Haggard Middle School, ongoing renovation packages at Plano Senior High and playground/track replacements at multiple campuses.
Plano ISD project staff told the board Tuesday that several bond‑funded construction projects are advancing through site, foundation and early building work.
Tony Pearson, director of planning and new construction, provided a project‑by‑project update. He said work on the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center is underway: site grading, piers and grade beam work are in progress and contractors are preparing for vertical construction once paving and foundational elements are complete. Pearson described the CTE Center as a roughly 20‑month construction project and said crews are averaging nearly 30 piers per day in recent work.
At Haggard Middle School (replacement described in the presentation as Hagrid Middle School), Pearson said the board approved a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) in February, the city released the building permit in March, and site work (peers and grade beams) is underway. He said the existing Haggard campus will remain in operation while the new building is constructed on the site and that construction is expected to run about 18 months.
Pearson also summarized work at Plano Senior High School, where the board authorized two construction packages. Package 1 (baseball/softball complex and related support work) has been turned over for practices and includes newly turfed fields, dugout expansions and related facilities. Package 2 covers the major renovation of the school’s buildings; Pearson said permits for portions of the package are now issued and phased interior and exterior renovations will continue through the multi‑year schedule.
Other updates included early‑childhood additions at Isaac and Pearson early‑childhood schools (kitchen/activity room expansions), playground and track replacements at middle schools (completion anticipated this summer for several campuses), the transportation fueling station (contractor approved May 20; procurement of long‑lead items commencing), and targeted renovations at Clark High School and Plano West and East campuses. For one enrollment center project, Pearson said most site and building systems are complete but final certificates of occupancy are awaiting final inspections tied to fire alarm and irrigation meter approvals.
Trustees asked for schedule confirmations and expressed interest in viewing periodic drone/aerial imagery; Pearson said the program provides regular construction photos and Friday construction meetings include visuals. No board action was required; trustees thanked staff for the update.
