The Eastpointe City Council on Tuesday approved a special-event application from Better Life Church to hold a fireworks display July 3, provided the church submits required insurance certificates, vendor permits and a cleanup deposit by the council’s deadline.
A resident who identified herself during public comment cited research on toxic chemicals emitted by traditional fireworks and urged the city to consider alternatives such as drone displays. The speaker referenced public-health groups and said fireworks can release particles and metals that affect lungs and wildlife.
Representatives of Better Life Church told the council they had been told by city staff they had until the next day to submit a certificate of liability insurance and other required paperwork. The council read the event conditions into the record, including that the fireworks company provide proof of applicable licensing and a certificate of liability insurance naming the city as an additional insured and that food trucks and tents be permitted and inspected. The council required a cleanup deposit to cover post-event cleaning.
After discussion about missed deadlines, the council considered two proposed amendment deadlines for required submissions. The council approved an amendment to extend past deadlines to 12:00 p.m. (noon) on July 2; that amended schedule became the condition for final approval. On a subsequent roll call the council approved the event contingent on meeting the listed requirements by the revised deadline.
Ending: The permit was approved conditionally; administration will verify receipt of the certificate of liability insurance, vendor permits, and the required deposit by noon July 2 and will notify the council if any condition is unmet.
