FRENSHIP ISD trustees recognize students across academics, athletics and career programs

Trustees of FRENSHIP ISD recognized students from Friendship High School for awards and competitive achievements spanning visual arts, athletics, career programs and inclusive athletics during a May board meeting.
The recognition segment highlighted a National Silver Key Scholastic Art and Writing award for Isabella Virostegui, historic advancement of the chess club to Super Nationals, multiple qualifiers in HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America), academic all-state honorees in golf, tennis, track and soccer, state qualifiers in speech and debate, DECA and FFA competitors, statewide esports placings and the Unified Track and Field team’s fifth-place finish at state.
The recognitions matter to the community because they signal program growth and student advancement to regional, state and national contests, which can affect future program support and school publicity. Board members and program sponsors used the public segment to thank families and coaches and to note college signings and scholarships earned by seniors.
Most of the remarks were introductions and short coach or sponsor statements acknowledging student accomplishments. Joey McLean, Friendship High School visual arts coordinator, noted Isabella’s Silver Key placement among “probably 7 or 800 pieces in the country.” Chess sponsor Abby Frio introduced five students who advanced to nationals. HOSA sponsors Lacey Shoneman and Elora Hancock listed students who qualified for state and noted a HOSA scholarship. Coaches and sponsors for student council, speech and debate, golf, tennis, soccer, track, DECA, BPA, FFA and esports each introduced their students and described the competitions or honors earned.
Unified Track and Field was a focal point: coaches Casey Smith and Aaron Tomlinson and student representatives described the team’s state trip, personal-best results, and an advocacy visit to the Texas State Capitol to press for unified sports and improved health services; a student said Friendship’s delegation was invited into a representative’s office during the visit.
No board action was taken during the recognition portion; the segment was a ceremonial acknowledgment of students and coaches. The meeting then moved on to the construction update item.
