Board moves September meeting; superintendent lists summer programs and reports principal struck by lightning

Superintendent Bill Griffin told the Alexander County Board of Education on July 14 that the district will move its September board meeting date from Sept. 8 to Sept. 15; the board approved the change unanimously.
Griffin reviewed summer programs and schedules: summer meal pickup is available Mondays at Stony Point (10:15–11:30), West Alexander Middle School (12:30–1:30) and Alexander Central High School (4:30–7:00). He also noted summer reading camps at Towsville Elementary and Wittenberg Elementary (three weeks, four days per week), a July 21 start for credit recovery at Alexander Central High School, elementary STEM camp dates, middle-school Career Tech Academy sessions, life-skills camps for high schoolers and the leadership retreat at Appalachian State’s Hickory campus beginning July 28.
Griffin reported a local incident affecting the school community: Newton-Conover High School Principal Chris Penley was struck by lightning during a recent fundraiser at Brushy Mountain Golf Course and “is still, to what I understand, to be in intensive care.” Griffin said district leaders worship closely with neighboring systems and expressed the board’s support and prayers for Penley and his family.
The board did not take further action on the incident; members praised staff and extended thanks for summer work on facilities and nutrition.
