Board adopts multiple policy revisions on second reading; first reading held for student wellness update

On July 14 the board approved second readings of several policy updates—parental involvement, school safety, discrimination and harassment provisions, Title IX procedures, and student promotion/accountability—and received a first reading on updates to the student wellness policy to incorporate SHAC goals.
The Alexander County Board of Education on July 14 approved second readings for a set of policy revisions covering parental involvement (13-10), school safety (15-10), federal discrimination and harassment provisions (17-10), Title IX nondiscrimination and related harassment processes (17-20, 17-25, 17-26), evaluation of student progress (3400) and student promotion and accountability (3420).
Dr. Alicia Cloward presented the changes and noted that the student wellness policy (6140) will be revised to embed the SHAC goals presented earlier; that wellness update was given as a first reading and will return as formal policy language.
Vice Chairman Degenhardt made the motion to approve the second readings; Corey McClain seconded. The board voted unanimously to adopt the listed policy revisions on second reading.
Dr. Cloward said the wellness policy update will incorporate the SHAC’s proposed goals for nutrition promotion and education and will come back for board review.
The board took no changes to the substantive Title IX or discrimination framework during the July 14 vote; the action recorded in the meeting was adoption of the listed revisions on second reading.
