Medina City Council on July 14 approved a $12,000 expenditure to the Medina County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) to cover animal-related services for 2025.
Council Member Rose described the SPCA’s work controlling animals within the city and noted the organization’s response to an extraordinary rodent event in a house where nearly 500 rats were removed. “I can’t begin to speak of all the good things they do to help the city keep the animals under control,” Rose said.
Mayor Hanwell said the city does not employ an animal control officer and that the annual contribution and partnership with the SPCA is less costly than hiring a city employee. “This is their expertise and then financially supporting them for the work that they do within the city,” the mayor said. He also said the SPCA provides an annual accounting of the animal issues it addresses for the city.
Council adopted Ordinance 01/24/25 by roll call; the vote recorded was unanimous, 7-0. The ordinance text on the agenda specified the expenditure amount ($12,000) for 2025.
