Highway subcommittee presses for clarification on miles completed, council approves Community Crossings projects

The Marshall County highway subcommittee told the county council on July 2025 that records of miles completed under the county’s road-improvement program did not match spreadsheets provided to the subcommittee, and members asked for clarified, reconciled figures before future meetings.
Subcommittee members said records showed 28.4 miles improved and a later 10.45 miles reported, which the presenter summed to 38.85 miles, but members questioned other pages showing 42 miles of single CO and 14 miles of triple CO that did not tally with the subcommittee’s numbers.
“None of those numbers add up with the numbers off of these pages here,” a subcommittee member said during the highway report, asking staff to reconcile the sources. The subcommittee also raised operational concerns about a shift from five eight-hour days to four 10-hour days for highway crews and said some residents have complained about the appearance of recently completed repairs.
Members praised Jason and his crew for ongoing work and noted the county has added an electric charging station for an electric truck. The subcommittee discussed equipment disposition: an asphalt zipper currently on bid with a highest offer of about $45,000 and the prospect of purchasing a total patcher if sale efforts fail.
At the council meeting the county approved Community Crossings appropriations covering multiple projects, with line items totaling $1,916,209.80. The listed projects and amounts were: - Ninth Road, Pineyatta County line: $1,043,754.50 - King Road to West Shore: $275,724.80 - 16 C: $420,189.00 - Nutmeg Meadows: $176,541.50
The council also approved transfers for additional paving projects, moving $422,904.50 for stone/gravel aggregates and related paving work. All motions were recorded as carried.
Subcommittee members asked that staff provide a reconciled spreadsheet identifying completed miles, material types (single coat vs triple coat), and dates of completion so the subcommittee can validate progress at its next meeting. They said clarification will help the county reconcile contractor invoices, public complaints and planning for capital purchases such as a patcher.
