The Tumwater Civil Service Commission on June 12 approved several civil-service eligibility lists, including the police officer entry-level list and the fire prevention officer list, and added an internal candidate to the police records supervisor list. The action updates the city’s pool of candidates available for hire or promotion and was approved by voice vote after motions from commissioners. Michelle Sutherland, the commission’s secretary/examiner, told the commission the police officer entry-level continuous list had four candidates added and two removed this month, leaving 22 names on the list. Pat Schneider moved to approve that list; Wendy Mowdy seconded the motion and the commissioners voted in favor. Sutherland said the police entry-level list included a top test score of 98.38. "I haven't seen that in a long time," Chair Blake Chard said during the discussion. On the fire prevention officer list, Sutherland said three candidates were on the continuous list; Todd Moore was ranked first after being added in July 2025 and Scott Kennedy withdrew. Brian Hurley, Tumwater’s fire chief, explained why Kennedy left the list: "He had actually been appointed to the position. He had previously been a fire lieutenant and, after about 6 months in the position, decided, that he wanted to go back to shift," Hurley said. Pat Schneider moved to approve the fire prevention officer list; the motion passed on a voice vote. The commission added one internal candidate to the police records supervisor eligibility list following an oral board earlier in the week. Sutherland said the candidate achieved a score of 96.67. Chair Blake Chard moved to add the candidate to the list; Pat Schneider seconded and the motion passed. No formal dissent was recorded on the eligibility-list votes. The commission noted these approvals maintain the city’s readiness to fill open or newly created positions. The commission’s next meeting is scheduled for Aug. 14, 2025.
