Commission hears maintenance updates: boardwalk repairs, splash-pad drainage and Fort Inge vandalism

Brandon (parks staff) reported to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission on July 14 that several routine maintenance issues were on staff’s radar and that no immediate safety hazards were identified.

On the boardwalk between Windjammer and Flintstone, Brandon said the top rails of some boards were lifting and would be reseated or re‑screwed; he characterized the work as maintenance rather than an immediate safety emergency. “There’s nothing that I see as a safety concern that that we need to address immediately,” Brandon said, adding crews will schedule repairs and clear debris beneath boards.

At the Pirates and Mermaids splash pad, Brandon inspected drainage and photographed a permeable cover placed over a drain. He said the cover slowed drainage but did not stop it and that he did not observe overflowing or a drowning hazard. “I don't think we need to address anything there at that time,” he said.

Commissioner Eric and Brandon raised vandalism and tent encampment removals at Fort Inge Park. Eric said he and Brandon have observed vandalism over several months, including damage to the disc-golf course and other features, and urged park users to report incidents to law enforcement so the city can maintain records.
