Natatorium reaches concrete and steel milestones; new chillers scheduled for August start

Summary
District construction update: natatorium core work and masonry progressing; one new chiller will be started Aug. 4 and the second chiller will follow, staff said. Projected natatorium completion date remains August 26 of the following year as reported by staff.
District construction staff reported progress on the new natatorium and on mechanical systems for the high school. Chris (site/construction staff) reported the underground utilities for the natatorium are complete and “the bowl of spaghetti” of utilities is in place. Steel erection was reported at about 30% complete; rebar deliveries were expected in two weeks with a one‑week install and two‑week detail period for upcoming work. Masonry and slab pours are ongoing and staff said the facility’s “core” work is moving forward on schedule. Staff confirmed major mechanical milestones: one new chiller is scheduled for startup on Aug. 4, with the second chiller planned to follow. Staff explained the new chillers are larger (current chillers described as 250 cubic air feet per chiller, new units described as 450), and that one of the new chillers should be able to carry normal building loads while the second provides backup during peak heat. Staff also said the new chiller stacks and fan heights were adjusted so the top of the unit would not extend into the courtyard sight lines. When asked about overall timing, staff reported the project remains on track for a target date (staff stated dates in the packet and said the next August 26 as a milestone). Staff also noted long lead items such as lockers and other equipment remain subject to supply‑chain timing and that some items originally slated for later installation were moved earlier to ensure building comfort before school starts. Next steps: steel erection and masonry continue, rebar and formwork deliveries will continue in the near term, and chiller startup is scheduled for Aug. 4.
