Board of Public Works orders stop sign for Second Street at South Jackson and Norplex Drive

The La Crosse Board of Public Works voted June 16 to amend traffic control at the intersection of Second Street, South Jackson Street and Norplex Drive to require southbound traffic on Second Street to stop.

Council President Dickinson asked for a verbal explanation so the public could understand the change. "Could this be explained verbally so that the public could know what this means?" Dickinson said. Staff member Jackson responded, "Yeah. So this is a 3 legged intersection and it should be treated such that Norplex and Jackson is the through where Second Street should have to stop for that traffic. The stop sign makes that more clear than the yield sign that is currently there." A meeting official also noted the nearby railroad crossing and said that makes the signage more confusing; the board’s change will put a stop sign on Second Street rather than a yield sign.

The board approved the finding and order by motion of Council President Dickinson, seconded by Director Train; members voted to approve the measure unanimously. The item was presented as agenda item 25-0672. No members of the public were recorded as speaking on this item during the meeting.

The amendment replaces a yield designation for southbound Second Street traffic with a stop requirement to make the right‑of‑way clearer at the three‑leg intersection and in the vicinity of a railroad crossing. The board did not specify an implementation date during the meeting; staff will proceed under the adopted order as provided in the agenda packet.
