Council approves National Grid undergrounding grant; council issues recognitions and student poetry citation
Summary
The Methuen City Council approved a public-service grant allowing National Grid to install underground facilities at Edgewood Avenue, and recognized local students and a student poet for community projects and contest awards.
The Methuen City Council voted Monday to accept a public service grant (WR3106408) that permits National Grid to install underground facilities at the intersection of Ellesmere Avenue and Edgewood Avenue to service 75 Edgewood Ave.
Councilors said the grant allows 14 linear feet of pipe to be installed under Edgewood Avenue; the measure passed after a public hearing and a motion by Councilor Cirillo.
The council also used part of its meeting to recognize local volunteers and students. The mayor and council presented a proclamation to seven Junior ROTC students for organizing the city’s annual flag-replacement event at Elmwood Cemetery. Separately, the council honored Devin Rosario of Methuen High School for placing in the Peace Poetry Contest and invited him to recite his poem on the council floor.
Why it matters The National Grid grant is a routine municipal acceptance that permits utility work within the public way to serve a private address. The recognitions highlight local civic engagement and student achievement.
What’s next National Grid will proceed with the underground installation consistent with municipal permitting and any required restoration of affected sidewalks and road surfaces. The council paused briefly for photos and presentations following the recognitions.
