City staff asks Indigenous Commission for input on Indigenous name for Observatory Mesa

City open-space staff requested input from the Flagstaff City Indigenous Commission about adding an Indigenous name or Indigenous-language element to Observatory Mesa, the commission said July 10.
Rose (city staff) said open-space staff approached the commission to consider whether an Indigenous name could be incorporated with the current name, similar to how Grand Canyon National Monument incorporated tribal names in an earlier renaming process. Rose suggested the commission consider names and to provide input to staff.
Commissioners discussed involving representatives of Navajo and Hopi nations and said they would include the topic on an upcoming agenda so members could prepare suggestions. Rose said she would place the matter on the next month’s agenda for fuller discussion and possible recommendations back to open-space staff.
