Councilwoman Lynn Weiser read a joint resolution declaring June 2025 as LGBTQIA+ Pride Month in the City of University Heights during the June 4 council meeting. The resolution was placed on first reading and will return for further consideration at a later meeting.
The measure, read aloud by Weiser, proclaims the city s support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex, asexual and allied residents and notes the city amended its charter in 2023 to add nondiscrimination protections. Weiser read language in the resolution that invoked historical context, including the Stonewall uprising, and included the line, "the arc of the moral universe is long but nevertheless bends towards justice."
Council members discussed procedure rather than the merits of the text. The law director explained that the council cannot suspend the normal reading rules without five votes, so the resolution will remain on first reading unless council secures that majority to waive rules and adopt sooner. The resolution text itself says it would become effective upon passage by not less than five council members and the mayor s approval.
The resolution includes a direction for the clerk to distribute notice of passage in the usual fashion and cites compliance with Section 121.22 of the Ohio Revised Code for open-meeting requirements.
Because the council did not attempt to take final action at the meeting, there was no final vote on the resolution. It will appear on a future agenda for continued consideration.
