Griffith Public Schools trustees approved an update to district insurance coverage that will place all transportation employees on the district’s Group Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) plan, staff said.
A staff member explained that prior language tied eligibility to employees working 30 hours per week, but schedules fluctuate and payroll reporting errors sometimes left employees incorrectly included or excluded. Staff said insuring all transportation employees would simplify administration and, at an estimated total additional cost of about $180 per year, would likely cost less than the staff time spent managing exceptions.
The board voted to approve Resolution 2025-25 (Transportation Group Life and AD&D Insurance). A motion and second were recorded and the motion carried on a voice vote; no roll-call tally was read.
Discussion and context: Presenters framed the change as administrative—reducing payroll reporting errors and paperwork—and provided a rough total cost estimate for the district of about $180 per year if all transportation personnel were covered. Trustees did not ask for further actuarial detail during the motion.
Next steps: The business office and payroll staff will implement the change with the district’s insurance vendor and update payroll reporting so all transportation employees are included under the plan.
