At the Reston Association board meeting July 10, two volunteer applicants addressed directors about their qualifications and committee preferences, and one was appointed to a standing committee.
Wally Bloomfield, who introduced himself as a longtime Reston homeowner and retired finance executive, told directors he had prior experience with the Design Review Board (DRB) and said he would approach DRB issues “from a balanced perspective of the community.” Bloomfield described his professional background — including work with the National Security Agency, the U.S. Navy and roles as a finance executive and volunteer — and said his retirement schedule would let him visit sites day or night if needed.
Dorothy Hoffman, speaking from an online connection, said she has a background as an Air Force intelligence officer and experience with proposal writing and RFPs. She told staff member Britney that, because of limited mobility, she preferred the Elections Committee over Covenants because Elections work does not require on-site inspections.
The board discussed the two interviews during executive session and returned to public session to take votes on multiple appointments. Directors approved Dorothy Hoffman for membership on the Elections Committee. The motion to appoint Hoffman was made and seconded; the roll call showed seven votes in favor and one abstention.
Other committee appointments confirmed in the meeting included Karen Anton as vice chair of the Covenants Committee (motion carried with multiple yeas, one no and one abstention), Jalal Mpar as vice chair of the Legal Committee, and two members appointed to Friends of Reston for Community Projects, Inc. (Herb Williams Bafoe and Todd Zincola). Those appointments were made by motion, seconded and approved during the meeting.
Board members and staff thanked the applicants for volunteering and reminded both they would receive follow-up from staff about next steps. The board said volunteer applications would be discussed further in the second executive session and that applicants would be notified promptly of final outcomes.
The board’s volunteer-appointment activity followed the meeting’s earlier member-interview process and concluded with formal votes to place volunteers on committees.
