The commission approved a sign variance for Watan Café at the Batteries Plus shopping center near Leap Road, allowing a replacement sign that fits the tenant’s proposed artwork within an existing sign cabinet but that technically exceeds the code measurement for internally illuminated area.
Staff noted the existing cabinet has been in place for some time and that, while the technical method of measuring illuminated area in the code would exceed the 50% illuminated maximum, the proposed sign meets the intent of the regulation and is compatible with the center’s signage. Staff recommended approval with conditions; the applicant confirmed the café’s name and provided the sign artwork.
The commission voted 5–0 to approve the variance with the staff-recommended conditions.
