Doreen Viola, the district finance presenter, told the board the district had received IDE A and Title I grant awards, but Title 2A, Title 3 and Title 4 awards were under federal review and not yet issued. She said the total amount in jeopardy was $2,994,957, itemized as Title 2A $946,085; Title 3 $481,023; Title 4A $945,003.49; and Title 4B (21st-century/after-school) $622,500.
Viola said the district had already transferred $1,400,000 into a sinking fund earlier in the year and expects a year-end surplus, but the administration has placed a hold on hiring and new requisitions tied to programs that depend on the uncertain federal grants. She said carryover funds can cover some items (for example, summer-school busing) but that unresolved grants may require decisions about positions or program reductions if federal support does not materialize.
Board members asked about timing and whether the funds are truly unavailable; staff said they had no additional guidance beyond notice last week that the awards were under review and that they were following up with the state Department of Education. The board was also briefed on other budget pressures, including projected overtime increases and higher electricity costs.
