At a special-called meeting that began at 11:00 a.m., the Lubbock Independent School District Board of Trustees voted to approve the adoption and purchase of Spanish-language Bluebonnet reading, language arts and math pilot instructional materials for kindergarten through grade five for the 2025–26 school year.
The board moved quickly to approve the purchase to ensure materials would arrive in time for the start of school. Curriculum staff said the Spanish materials match the adapted English Bluebonnet curriculum the district previously adopted and that the pilot will allow teachers to use Spanish-language materials aligned to the district’s adapted units.
Misty, a Lubbock ISD curriculum staff member, said, “Families always still have the right to opt out of something that we are reading, but our teachers are doing an adapted curriculum.” The staff presentation said approval was needed now so the district could complete procurement before the July regular board meeting and have materials on hand at the start of the school year.
The motion to approve the adoption and purchase passed 6 to 0. After the vote the board recessed to an executive closed session under the provisions of Texas Government Code Chapter 551.
The board did not specify implementation timelines, exact purchase totals, or which campuses will participate in the pilot beyond the grades and subject areas noted. Those budget and implementation details were not specified during the meeting.
