Sandy Anderson elected chair, Robin Lady elected vice chair of Fairfax County School Board

At the July 10 regular meeting of the Fairfax County School Board, members elected Sandy Anderson to serve as chair and Robin Lady to serve as vice chair for one‑year terms under the board’s annual organizational procedures. The nominations and votes took place during the meeting called to order July 10; the board then approved a package of organizational arrangements that included designating meeting dates, setting member salaries, appointing board clerks and deputies, naming the superintendent’s designee for meetings and retaining outside law firms. That broader organizational motion passed with eight votes in favor, zero opposed and one abstention. The election followed the procedure in the Code of Virginia, §22.1‑76, which requires election of a chair at the annual organizational meeting. Board members who spoke in support praised Anderson’s attention to governance detail and teamwork. Anderson, after her election, thanked colleagues and said she would continue work begun during her vice‑chair year. Robin Lady, elected vice chair, spoke to her decades of experience in Fairfax County Public Schools and outlined three guiding questions she said she will use when evaluating board decisions: how will this impact students, staff and families. Both the chair and vice chair elections were recorded as unanimous among members present. The board’s organizational approvals also included appointment of Marty Smith as the superintendent’s designee to attend meetings the superintendent cannot attend; Christina Setlow as Clerk of the School Board; and Kevin Jackson and Janet Brown as deputy clerks, each with required bonds. The board also authorized the chair and clerk to sign legal documents on the board’s behalf and listed outside legal firms to serve the division as needed. The organizational motion — covering meeting calendars, compensation, clerk appointments, agent designations and outside counsel — was moved from the dais and later approved.
