City reports first-year measures: fleet electrification, chargers and recycling actions under sustainability plan

Staff presented the 2024 municipal-operations status report under the city’s Sustainability Master Plan (SMP), adopted in October 2023, highlighting completed actions and near-term priorities.
Completed items: The city purchased 12 electric pickup trucks (Ford F-150 Lightning models), installed 56 electric-vehicle charging stations across three city sites (City Hall, Constitution Park and the library), and rolled out a revised vehicle reservation system to encourage staff to use city EVs for official travel. Staff said new EVs and operational changes will reduce vehicle fuel and maintenance costs by about $120,000 annually.
Facilities and energy: The city completed an LED lighting retrofit at the library and submitted an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant application to retrofit the police station’s lighting.
Workplace and community programs: Staff provided heat-risk training to 59 employees, audited landfill/recycling/compost bin placement at City Hall to improve diversion and organized a mulch giveaway to encourage reuse of yard materials. The city also held a library “sustainable craft swap” to promote reuse and reached residents through social media and web pages tied to the climate action plan.
Council priorities and next steps: The council adopted “sustainability and environmental stewardship” as a FY25–26 strategic goal; staff will prioritize SMP implementation tasks in departmental work plans and report progress annually.
Ending note: Staff characterized the SMP as a living document and said additional measures will be included in annual work planning and that the city remains focused on municipal operations as a model for community sustainability.
