Preliminary SOL data show mixed gains; district to await VDOE accreditation figures and prioritize instructional leadership and science supports

District curriculum and data staff presented the board with preliminary standardized‑test results and a plan for moving from data to action. Instruction leaders said the locally compiled raw scores show “encouraging signs of progress” in several elementary schools and that division‑level calculations using historical VDOE recovery and growth formulas would indicate a majority of schools meeting reading and math pass‑rate thresholds, but the final accreditation picture remains pending until the Virginia Department of Education releases official calculations.

Miss Wheeler and Miss Matheny of the data team walked the board through school‑level results and highlighted areas of concern. “Science continues to be an area of focus,” they said for several elementary and middle schools, and staff noted that some middle‑school and elementary science scores reflect curriculum and instructional gaps tied to grade‑to‑grade continuity. At the high school the teams said reading and math showed small declines while science and history were roughly stable; summer remediation was expected to raise some high‑school end‑of‑course pass rates.

Administrators emphasized that the next step is not just releasing numbers but translating them into actions: targeted interventions, data digs by grade and classroom, and stronger instructional leadership in buildings. Dr. Houghton said the division’s leadership conference stressed shifting from “just collecting the data” to producing concrete action steps that principals and teachers can follow. The district plans to receive official state accreditation and school‑quality profiles in September and said it would bring a detailed memo and recommended supports to the board once the state data are final.
