County GIS team wins state recognition for live election reporting; seeks expanded interdepartmental work

Monroe County’s Geographic Information Systems team reported Thursday that it received a platinum-level recognition and a county award from the Indiana Geographic Information Council for consecutive years, including recognition in 2024 and again in 2025 for live election reporting done in coordination with the Election Board and county technology services.
Tron (county speaker) provided a short history of the Indiana Geographic Information Council and said county staff used a training fund — created with support from commissioners and counsel — to send personnel from various departments to formal GIS education. John Baten, the county’s GIS coordinator, and GIS technician Irina Valentine Bullen attended and showcased the county’s work at the state conference.
The county noted the GIS work supports dispatch and first responders by providing road centerlines, address points and other core datasets. Staff asked other county departments to contact the GIS team to explore data visualization and transparency projects and said they hope to expand these services gradually.
Commissioners congratulated the team and acknowledged prior broadband outreach projects that had lost funding but provided valuable experience for the county’s data and notification efforts.
