County approves contract to clean floodway property in Steinfeld ahead of damages hearing

Monroe County commissioners on Thursday approved a contract not to exceed $7,000 with Bloomington Junk Services to clean a Steinfeld property at North Sycamore and West Walnut that sits in a floodway.
Planning staff said the property, which the county filed against in 2023, has been partially cleaned but still contains a burned horse trailer and other debris. Because the lot is in the floodway and a former occupant had created berms and rock barriers that affect regular floodwater flows, planning asked the county to remove materials and restore the property to reduce flood hazards.
Planning director provided images during the meeting and said the county will partner with the contractor to remove debris (including arranging dumpsters) and intends to complete this work ahead of a damages hearing set for Sept. 23, 2025. Staff characterized the contract as a temporary outlay that would be recovered later through the county’s damages process against the property owner.
Commissioners approved the contract 3-0. No public comment was offered on the item.
