City gives progress update on 2025 street reconstruction projects downtown and neighborhood corridors

Staff said Cherry Street and Randolph phases are progressing: phase one (Cherry from West Wausau to Strobridge) is complete with surface work finished; utilities on Randolph from Merrill to Third are nearing completion and contractors expect to begin phase three work the week of July 21. Fulton Street phases were described as mostly complete in initial phases, with remaining utility work and asphalt lifts scheduled. The Second Avenue trail extension (south) from Stewart to Packer Drive was paved and was in restoration work.
Helen (project representative) provided an update on the downtown reconstruction of Washington/Third and Jackson, saying the contractor was about three weeks ahead of schedule; final exterior work by the adjacent building (the Foundry) must be completed before some final sidewalk-and-planting work between the new curb and the building can be finished. City staff said the downtown corridor should be open by September 1 and that the contractor expects to meet that timeline.
What happens next: Projects will continue through summer and into late summer with paving lifts and restoration; staff invited questions from alderpersons and said they would notify businesses and residents about specific closures and openings as phases are completed.
