Cochise County sheriff praises volunteers, honors long-serving SAT leader after busy weekend

Sheriff Mark Danos used the KWCD First Watch broadcast to thank volunteer groups that support the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, including the sheriff’s assist team (SAT), reserve deputies and search-and-rescue volunteers.
Danos recounted the SAT’s origins — initiated under a previous sheriff and shaped by community volunteers — and said John Black has led the SAT for about 20 years. He said the SAT provides services from neighborhood-watch support and house checks to funeral escorts and search-and-rescue assistance.
“We took him to lunch yesterday to recognize him. But thanks to all our sat sheriff's assist team for doing all they do from the neighborhood watches, the volunteer, or the funeral escorts for the veterans, and then search and rescue,” Danos said.
Danos also described a search-and-rescue operation that located a dog named Charlie; the dog’s owner was later found deceased at a remote scene. The dog was taken to a Wilcox animal shelter and, after next-of-kin notification, a family member flew in from out of state to reclaim Charlie. Danos called it a feel-good outcome amid a tragic situation.
The sheriff additionally announced a nomination of Deputy Braunstein by Mothers Against Drunk Driving for his enforcement work and commended the deputy’s traffic- and DUI-enforcement efforts.
Danos highlighted that more than 100 volunteers support the sheriff’s office in various capacities and credited them with helping the agency meet community needs.
