Highway purchases truck conversion; cost rises to $170,000, build scheduled for October

Adams County staff told the Highway Committee on July 10 that the county has ordered a 2025 truck conversion for winter maintenance and that the price is about $170,000, above the $150,000 estimate used in the asset replacement schedule.
Pat, the highway department head, said the equipment order has been placed and the build is scheduled for October. "The proposal that we got from the builder was that 170,000 actually shown on the screen here now. So that is over 20,000 more than what we had anticipated," Pat said. He said the equipment is a conversion (not a brand-new chassis) and that the vendor Henderson is the only supplier able to provide a unit of this size and capability.
Pat described the unit: "It's called the Storm Extreme. Storm Extreme unit carries 1,700 gallons of salt brine and about 6, 7 ton of rock salt." He said the county’s machinery-account balance can cover the conversion: "Last check on our machinery account had 872,000 in it. So, yes, we do have the funds to do this truck conversion."
Staff noted a logistics concern from a past build: a valve-body failure delayed an earlier truck. "We're gonna try to do some live video or some pictures, get that stuff over to the truck builder so they can look at this valve body ... If it is deteriorated ... that in itself could cause delay," Pat said. He added the county has two candidate vehicles for conversion and can sequence builds if a valve-body replacement delays one vehicle.
Committee members asked about sole-source procurement; Pat said this vendor is the only one producing a unit of this capacity and confirmed quoted prices remain valid. There was no motion recorded to alter funding; staff said the conversion aligns with the previously approved asset-replacement plan and will be charged to the machinery account.
