The Randall County Commissioners Court on June 10 authorized purchase of two used semi trucks for the fire department via a reverse auction. Panhandle Express Transportation of Hereford submitted a bid of $24,000 per unit for two trucks, for a total of $48,000.
County staff said the reverse auction met competitive requirements and that the specifications required model year 2019 or newer and mileage no more than 650,000. The two trucks inspected for the purchase were a 2019 model with slightly over 600,000 miles and a 2020 model with roughly 550,000 miles; staff reported both trucks were mechanically sound, had new tires and had recent radiator work performed.
The trucks will be used to carry large water tanks for firefighting; department staff estimated low annual mileage (roughly 3,000 miles) for that duty. The court approved the award on a 4-0 vote.
