School board adopts wide-ranging policy revisions; board member urges clarity on professional development requirements

Henry County Public Schools’ board on Tuesday approved a set of policy revisions staff said were required to reflect changes from the General Assembly and to maintain legal compliance.

Staff told the board the proposed revisions had been presented for a first reading on June 12 and reviewed by the Virginia School Boards Association. The board voted to adopt the recommended changes after a brief discussion.

During the discussion a board member called attention to policy GCL, which governs professional development. The member said the policy reflects a state requirement that the district provide professional development to meet the rules for “highly qualified” professionals, and urged staff and colleagues to consider that statutory context when scheduling training. The board’s comments emphasized that professional development is meant to satisfy state code and the district’s strategic needs rather than being held for its own sake.

A motion to approve the revisions was made and seconded by a board member; the chair put the matter to a vote and the revisions were adopted.
