Galveston County Commissioners Court approved a resolution on July 7 naming July as Parks and Recreation Month and heard a presentation from Julie Walker, parks director, describing events and outreach planned across county parks.
The resolution recognizes the contributions of park and recreation professionals and promotes community events. Walker said the theme this year is “build together, play together” and highlighted a series of events: a Bolivar beach cleanup on July 11, a family program at Carvad Park on July 18, Parks and Rec Professional Day on July 19, a “touch a truck” event at Walter Hall on July 23, and a popsicle event at Bayside Community Center on July 30.
Walker told the court these programs “celebrate parks and recreation professionals and how they improve the lives of tens of millions of people” and urged commissioners to publicly thank field staff who work in difficult weather. She distributed a calendar of events to the court and answered procedural questions about participation and liability checks for activities such as vehicle demonstrations.
The court approved the resolution as part of the consent calendar; no separate vote or funding was attached during the July 7 meeting.
