High school student representative outlines plans for a spring 'Tenafly‑style' Olympics, fundraisers and a revamped school store

Mackenzie Forte, the New Milford High School student board representative, briefed the Board of Education on Nov. 16 about student‑council plans to expand school spirit activities, raise funds and reopen a redesigned school store.

Mackenzie said student council leaders visited Tenafly High School on Nov. 9 to study that school’s annual “Tenafly Olympics” and plan a similar spring spirit week culminating in an Olympic‑style event to replace the traditional field day. The proposal would feature grade‑versus‑grade competitions and themed days during spirit week.

For fundraising, student council plans a morning hot‑cocoa sale for students during winter months and an apparel sale of newly designed school merchandise. Mackenzie said the council is also revamping the school store and is discussing installing a sliding window to create a storefront feel. She said the council is coordinating with Mr. Coyne and Mrs. Banilla to have students from the transition class operate the store to reinforce money‑recognition and cashier skills; the council is also evaluating point‑of‑sale systems to manage inventory.

Board members praised the plan and asked operational questions. One board member offered help connecting the student council to an existing point‑of‑sale system the district uses.

Mackenzie closed by thanking the board and noting the council’s readiness to implement the planned activities in winter and spring; no formal board action was requested.
