District reports COPS security grant and SDA asbestos reimbursement; funds tied to Alyssa’s Law compliance

Board secretary Mr. Gibbs told the board the COPS reimbursement — budgeted for the 2025–26 school year — covers security items purchased to help the district maintain compliance with Alyssa’s Law. He also reported the SDA grant application for $101,314 for asbestos removal at Hillview School had been approved on May 28 and the funds were received June 4.
Administrators said the district has received the SDA funds and that the owner of 494 Newark–Pompton Turnpike submitted a letter accepting the appraised value on June 4; that separate matter is under consideration. Mr. Gibbs also reported attending the New Jersey Association of School Business Officials conference and noted a workshop about repurposing commercial buildings to address space needs.
No formal vote was recorded on the reimbursements; the board had previously approved the SDA grant submission on May 28. The COPS reimbursement is budgeted for the upcoming 2025–26 fiscal year.
