Board approves financial, personnel and contract package; district plans food-service review after student complaint

At the June meeting the board approved routine finance and personnel items, including a food-service management contract for the coming year, district purchasing and budget motions, and a set of personnel and summer assessment contracts. Business administrator Ms. Coleman presented the finance items and said the district used a state-authorized RFP process for the food-service contract.
NutriServe Food Service Management Company was recommended to continue as the district''s food-service manager for the next school year at a flat fee of $18,100, according to the documentation presented. The board also heard a BCIP return-of-surplus resolution required by the state Department of Banking; the administration said Oakland will receive $2,285 returned and that money will be used to offset next year''s bill.
The board approved a series of routine purchases, warrants, and personnel items (personnel and substitutes for 2025''6 and summer contracts for assessment and related services). The board approved the district''s amended Collingswood''Oakland purchasing manual as attached to board documents and authorized temporary facility requests and related applications for summer state approval.
Student food-safety complaint and district response: during public comment a fifth-grade student, Arturo Treadwear, described repeated problems with cafeteria meals, including finding hair and "plastic" in food and described testing an alternative-milk recommendation. Arturo urged the district to "switch to more nutritional options such as alternative milk options without dairy for people who are lactose intolerant." (student comment verbatim). The board and superintendent acknowledged the concern. Dr. McDowell said the district will form a summer advisory group of parents, nutrition specialists and other stakeholders to review food-service menus and safety procedures and implement changes where appropriate.
Administration also presented other procurement items: a renewal of a five-year Pitney Bowes postage lease (year four active), purchasing updates, and an approval to place an old piano on the govdeals.com auction after an unsuccessful reverse bid. The business administrator said she will present a full list of bills for ratification at the August meeting after closing the books for the fiscal year.
