Oakland Public School presented teacher Michael McCarty with its 2025 Teacher of the Year award and named Maria Populous Instructional Assistant of the Year at a board meeting where staff and families attended the recognition. McCarty, who the board described as having worked in the district for 28 years and serving in recent years as a learning-accelerated teacher, was honored for long-standing classroom service and leadership; board members and colleagues praised his work and noted he is retiring. Populous was recognized by staff for “kindness, patience and caring nature,” and for building daily, supportive relationships with students and colleagues. The board voiced thanks to both honorees and to the Oakland PTA for events that supported staff during Teacher Appreciation Week.
