Worcester ballpark cancels Youth Work orientation; staff update event scheduling and website access

The Worcester Ballpark Commission was told a Youth Work summer orientation it approved last month will not move forward because organizers found it financially infeasible and a related agreement with the WooSox had not been finalized. Commissioners discussed event scheduling, upcoming bookings at Polar Park and changes to the city website intended to make the community-day application easier to find.

Commissioners and staff said the canceled Youth Work orientation reduces the slate of commission-approved community events in the coming months. A WooSox representative reported there are no commission-approved ballpark events scheduled in the near term; recent uses of the park included graduations for David Prouty High School, Worcester Alternative School and Tech Connections Academy. The representative said the WooSox will host the MIAA baseball state championships Friday, June 13, and Saturday, June 14, with a rain date of Sunday, June 15, and that the annual Food Truck and Beer Fest is scheduled for June 28 with a rain date of June 29. The Fourth of July Family Fest is set for Friday, July 4.

Matt, a staff member with the city's Department of Public Facilities, said the department and the city are updating the municipal website to make the public facilities page and the ballpark community-day application easier to find. "I would expect probably by July 1, we're set up so that it's much easier to find and more accessible," Matt said. He said the remaining change is to route incoming event emails to a group inbox so staff coverage is maintained when an individual is on vacation.

Commissioners asked questions about permits and annual limits on event days. A commission member noted that fireworks at the ballpark operate under the city permit, and staff confirmed fireworks are restricted to permitted dates. On the number of event days, staff said they believe the contract allows a total of 10 event days per year, with four of those intended for road-race-type events, but staff said the commissioner-level summary in the meeting did not resolve whether the contract differentiates "event days" from "community days." Staff committed to review the agreement and email the commission the precise contract language and limits.

No formal policy changes or new approvals were made at the meeting; the commission approved the minutes of the May 14, 2025 meeting and later adjourned. Commissioners set the next commission meeting for Sept. 10, 2025, at 10 a.m. at Polar Park.

Details and clarifications raised during the meeting included that the Youth Work orientation was described as financially infeasible even with a city application in place, that public facilities staff are coordinating with the information-technology team on the website changes, and that specific attendance figures for recent games were not provided during the discussion.
