Gadsden Public Library unveils 'Lib Cabinet' vending unit at Carver; another active in East Gadsden

A library representative (Speaker 1) with the Gadsden Public Library announced the installation of a Lib Cabinet vending unit at the Carver Community Center and said another unit is already operating at the East Gadsden Community Center.

"We are thrilled to officially unveil the Gadsden Public Library's newest out outreach effort, the Lib Cabinet at the Carver Community Center," Speaker 1 said. "This innovative library vending machine brings books and movies directly into the community effectively creating a new branch of the library right here at Carver. This marks not just 1, but we also have 2 new branches of the Gadsden Public Library with another Lib Cabinet already up and running at the East Gadsden Community Center."

A second speaker (Speaker 2) described the units as a convenience for residents who otherwise would need to travel to the central library. "This is a great opportunity for this community to be able to check out books and not have to be transported to downtown Gadsden Public Library," Speaker 2 said. He added that the library intends to place more units in neighborhoods: "So I said, okay, I like it. So I said, alright, let's put as many out as we can. Our goal is to continue to put these out in the communities."

Library staff (Speaker 3) emphasized the library's programming and the units' role in supporting summer reading for children and teens. "Right now our primary focus is summer reading, helping children and teens maintain strong reading levels when school is out," Speaker 1 said. Staff also listed weekly programs tied to outreach: "Every Tuesday morning at 10AM, we have a free ballet class that's for ages 2 to 14. And then every Friday, we have, like, a rotating selection of different programs. Those will be at 10AM as well. And we do have these pamphlets on the back table if you wanna get those as you go out that have our complete schedule."

The library credited Gadsden City High School staff and students for producing an introduction video for the Lib Cabinet. "We'd also like to extend our thanks to Joel Gulich, principal at Gadsden City High School, and David Wooten, the drama teacher, for helping us recruit 3 talented students who assisted in creating a video to introduce the Lib Cabinet to our patrons," Speaker 1 said. The video, the library said, will be posted to the library's Facebook page and website.

Speakers framed the Lib Cabinet as part of an effort to modernize library services and reach younger readers. "Y'all libraries are changing. They're evolving as you know... Reading makes a difference," Speaker 2 said.

No formal vote or ordinance was announced during the remarks; speakers described the installations and expressed intent to expand the program to additional community centers.
