Committee questions P-card redactions; finance and offices explain confidentiality and process

Board members at the July 10 Kane County Judicial and Public Safety Committee questioned why some P-card entries in the meeting packet were heavily redacted, leaving only expense totals visible.

A board member pointed to page 158 and asked why non-sensitive vendors such as restaurants or marketplaces would be redacted. A representative of the State's Attorney's Office responded that offices redact information to protect confidentiality, safety and the integrity of ongoing court cases and that some line items related to security.

Finance Director (Mister Hunt) clarified that those redactions occur after departments submit P-card charges: "The report you're looking at on page 1 58 is not something that is generated by the state's attorney's office. Those redactions are a function of the finance department who, redact under certain circumstances. We don't redact that information when we submit the p card charges." Court services added that juvenile restitution payments processed through court services are redacted to protect victims' privacy and to avoid direct contact between victims and juvenile offenders.

Outcome: Committee members received explanations from multiple offices but did not vote on a policy change. The discussion highlighted the tension between public transparency for expense reporting and confidentiality requirements related to court cases and victim restitution.
