The Chicopee City Council voted to send a letter of support urging continued federal funding for the Westover Job Corps Center and the national Job Corps program.

Councilors said the program provides workforce training and support services to young people and that local advocates had asked the council for public backing. Councilor Arriaga led the item; Councilor Wagner said he was “with Councilor Arriaga on this” and praised continued advocacy in the face of federal actions. The council approved the resolution and authorized sending it to the city’s federal legislative delegation.

Supporters noted recent developments in federal court filings and legislative attention but said the resolution is primarily a statement of support for a program they view as helping at-risk youth obtain training, housing and job placement assistance.

The motion passed by roll call with recorded assent from present councilors. The council president asked members to sign the letter before leaving the meeting so it could be sent promptly.
