The Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors approved a payroll-status change for Christina Trentonios in the county engineering department after a lengthy discussion about duties, classification and pay equity.
Interim Engineer Brandon Burmeister presented the recommendation and explained that Trentonios had taken on additional administrative duties while the department operates with interim management. Several supervisors pushed for a formal job-study and HR review to document whether the position’s duties had changed substantially and whether a reclassification or more measured step increase would be appropriate. One supervisor cited the county’s position-classification and salary-administration policies and questioned the scale of the proposed increase.
During the discussion, supervisors noted the employee’s historical pay trajectory and compared the requested change with typical board-approved annual increases; several named colleagues expressed concern about internal equity and the effect of a larger, immediate raise on other employees. The applicant’s supervisor and staff said Trentonios had absorbed additional administrative responsibilities while leadership positions are in transition.
After debate and at least one motion to approve by a supervisor citing policy sections that allow the board to classify or direct a job study, the board took roll-call votes. The motion to approve the payroll-status change passed; some supervisors voiced reservations and asked human resources to conduct a job-study and classification review to validate job expectations, pay grade and any future adjustments.
Why it matters: the decision adjusts pay and signals the board’s approach to interim responsibilities, classification reviews and internal pay equity. Supervisors requested a follow-up job-study and HR analysis to ensure consistency with county hiring and classification policies.
Next steps: county staff and HR to consider a job-study and classification review and to return to the board if reclassification or further pay changes are warranted.
