City agrees to Waste Management’s switch to single-day Thursday pickup starting week of July 21

City administration told the River Falls City Council on July 8 that Waste Management will shift residential garbage collection in River Falls to a single weekly pickup day: Thursday. The administrator said the change was negotiated with the contractor and will begin the week of July 21, with July 24 presented in the meeting as the operative date for the one‑day collection pilot.
Administrator Scott said Waste Management approached the city seeking to standardize collection days across nearby communities; the city asserted its contract rights and negotiated timing and the collection day. Officials chose Thursday rather than Friday to reduce the risk of weekend service carryover and to give residents time to adjust routines. Scott told the council the change will affect roughly two‑thirds of households that will need to change their existing pickup day and that the contractor remains under contract through the end of the year.
Officials said the city will notify customers in advance and that if a household mistakenly puts a can out on an earlier day the contractor will still pick it up on Thursday during the first weeks after the change. Scott acknowledged there may still be missed pickups and operational issues and said the city will continue to hold the contractor accountable for service problems.
