Lynn Public Schools approves general generative AI policy, directs procedures development

The Lynn Public Schools committee on June 24 approved a new generative artificial intelligence policy that directs the superintendent to create implementing procedures and emphasizes ethical, responsible use and data privacy.
The policy, presented by Charlie Gallo, Lynn Public Schools compliance officer, says the district will “embrace but govern” AI: maintain an authorized tools list, require staff training, ask staff and students to disclose use where appropriate, and prohibit sharing confidential student and staff information with AI systems.
Gallo framed the policy within broader state and federal moves on AI, citing the White House executive order “Advancing Artificial Intelligence for American Youth” (April 23) and a DESE (Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education) April 29 initiative to create model policies and resources for districts. He said the policy is intentionally broad because AI tools and guidance are evolving quickly and that administrative procedures will carry the operational detail.
Committee members asked about detection and discipline for student misuse. Gallo said the district’s Microsoft Copilot in its Office suite can help teachers scan student work for AI patterns and that teachers’ knowledge of their students’ writing remains central. Committee members also discussed Turnitin and other vendor tools as possible additions if needed.
The committee voted to advance and then adopt the policy. The vote record on the final adoption showed committee members present voting in favor. The policy authorizes the superintendent to develop and update procedures as technology and state guidance evolve.
The district plans to reconvene the policy as DESE and federal guidance develop, and to build out the administrative procedures with input from teachers, principals and the Lynn Teachers Union.
